Sun City

After arriving in Johannesburg and picking up our car, we drove to Sun City and checked into the "Lost Palace Hotel". Way over the top

in animal sculptures, paintings, and wild architecture - like Disney on steroids.

In the hotel's courtyard stood a magnificent sculpture of "Shawu" one of seven elephants

with the largest tusks ever seen in Kruger National Park

We start out on a 2-day drive to "Krugar National Park" through the Mpumalanga Mountains known for their astounding natural beauty: a landscape where cascading waterfalls meet wetlands, deep forests, and savannahs filled with grazing wildlife.

After a full day's drive through spectacular scenery, we slowly descended out of the high mountainous area into a historical gold mining town, declared a National Monument in 1986 and we decided to spend the night.

"Pilgrims Rest"

This small town offered a fascinating window into the past and captured the spirit of a bygone era and the peoples' quest for gold. We checked into the Royal Hotel.
